We had to put our Shadow to sleep last night. Her arthritis had gotten so bad, she could only bear light weight on one of her front paws and her hips made it difficult to get up some mornings. The mammary tumors kept getting bigger.
Her spirit was always desirous of playing her favorite version of soccer with her kids. Despite the discomfort I knew she felt, she always wanted to chase the ball and bounce it back to who ever would play. So we all played with her for a few last minutes and then took her to the vet's office.
All four of us were petting her and giving her Shadow love when she stopped breathing. The kids wanted to be there and I respected that decision. The Vet was a bit disapproving of their presence but when faced with collective stoney stares he backed off. This is a new Vet to the practice we've been going to for years and we don't like him much.
Thunder, our other dog, is very confused as to why her Mama is not here and has been walking around whining this morning. I feel like whining myself.
